Skylight Installation

Skylights are installed using a range of different installation techniques. The two most popular are deck mounted and curb counted. Mountain West Roofing will assess your home’s roof pitch, roofing material, and ceiling type (as well as new cut-in installation or replacement) to determine which installation is best for your home.

Different Types of Skylights

There several different options of styles, sizes, and glazing that you can choose from. The styles that are most popular include:

Fixed Curb or Deck Mount Skylights: These skylights are designed for installation using a curb or fastened directly to the roof deck. Fixed or Deck Mount skylights offer an economical way of transforming and brightening up dark hallways, stairwells and other closed-in dark spaces.

Manual Venting: Manual venting skylights not only allow the natural light to shine in, but they also open to enable fresh air in and venting to restore proper moisture balance to the home allowing stale, humid air to be released.

Electric Venting: Electric skylights are a wonderful way to light up your home naturally. Let in fresh air with the touch of a button. Forgot to close the window, no problem. The rain sensor will close the skylight during heavy weather.

Solar Powered Venting: This amazing solar powered skylight features a solar panel that captures available daylight and uses it to recharge a highly efficient, fully concealed battery powered operator and control system. No wires needed for this install as the windows are completed powered by the solar power.

There are lots of options when it comes to the glazing. The skylights can be glazed in glass, plastic, and have protective glaze films. The different features will affect the scratch and impact-resistance, light regulation, UV rays, temperature levels and privacy levels.

Skylight Maintenance

We recommend that you have your skylights inspected regularly by a professional. Inspect your ceilings and floors in rooms with skylights for damp spots or staining from water. Small cracks and other defects can lead to more extensive structural damage down the line. Remove all debris from skylights annually. If this is something that you are not comfortable doing yourself, you can get your skylights cleaned professionally when you are getting your gutters cleaned or roof inspected.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt Shingles

Are you looking to have your roof replaced and are wondering if asphalt shingles are the right choice?

Determining if asphalt shingles are right for your home depends on a couple of different factors: what style preference you have, and what sort of budget you are working with. Asphalt shingles are a popular choice because they hold up well in any kind of climate, are cost-effective, and are easy to maintain.

Mountain West Roofing provides high-quality asphalt roof repairs and replacements to Coquitlam and surrounding areas. We offer an exemplary roofing experience with our customer service and workmanship.

What are Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt roofing shingles are one of the most used roofing materials because they are relatively inexpensive and simple to install. There are three different design styles of asphalt shingles: 3-tab (or strip), architectural shingles, and luxury (also called premium).

  • 3-tab asphalt shingles are basic shingles that lay flat. They come with a strip of material with 3 tabs. The tabs are generally 3 times the length to height of the shingle. This makes each shingle look like three different pieces, while actually being one long piece.
  • Architectural shingles are composed of a heavy fibreglass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules that are tightly embedded in carefully refined, water-resistant asphalt. These give you a textured pattern and unique style of a wood shake roof.
  • Another variation of architectural shingles are luxury asphalt shingles. They are composed much the same way as architectural shingles; however, they are typically larger and thicker than other asphalt shingles and are made to look like slate.

Asphalt Shingle Colours

If you want your roof to compliment your house design, then you are in luck. Asphalt shingles come in an unlimited number of colour and style choices. There is no shortage of tones to choose from. Traditional grays, blacks, and browns will give you a traditional roof. Looking for something more modern and unique? Asphalt shingles come in varieties of blues and greens as well. With the choices available today, the only problem you’ll have is deciding which colour and style will look the best on your home.

Asphalt Shingle Cost

Asphalt shingles are popular due to their affordability!

One of the biggest appeals of asphalt shingles is the price. They are one of the most cost-effective roofing shingles available.

Not only are asphalt shingles a less expensive material option, but the labour cost for installation is also less due to how easy they are to install – making asphalt shingles the most economical roofing option available.

Pros of Asphalt Roofs

Cost is not the only thing that should be considered when purchasing a new roof. Fortunately, asphalt shingle roofs have lots of other benefits that we can share with you. There is a reason why asphalt shingle roofs are the most common style of roof that you will see in all neighborhoods of the Lower Mainland.

Here is a list of why roofing contractors and homeowners choose asphalt for their roofing projects:

  • Affordability (materials and labor)
  • Longevity of the roof
  • Materials are easily available
  • Impact resistance

Cons of Asphalt Roofs

Now that we have outlined all the benefits of asphalt shingle roofs, what are the downsides?

Regular roof maintenance is required if you choose asphalt for your new roof. It is recommended that you have a roof inspection and routine maintenance performed on your asphalt roof every 2–3 years.

Asphalt shingle roofs are also not the greatest for insulation, so you won’t be saving on your energy consumption. Additionally, since asphalt shingles are made from petroleum, they are not the most environmentally friendly option available.

  • Requires periodic maintenance
  • Low insulation value
  • Environmental impact

TPO and PVC Roofing

TPO and PVC Roofing

Whether you have a low slope roof or a flat roof where the natural flow of water is slow, it is important that your roofing membrane is durable. Two options that have become popular for their longevity and durability over the years are TPO and PVC roofing.

TPO (Thermoplastic olefin) and PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) are two different kinds of plastics used in roofing projects. These thermoplastics are a great single-ply membrane option and are perfect for larger roofing projects.

Single-ply membranes are sheets of plastic and other synthetics that can be adhered to insulation to create a layer of protection for your roof. Then a watertight membrane seal is formed by hot air welding the seams.

TPO and PVC Roofing

TPO & PVC Roofing Applications

Single-ply roofing membranes are extremely versatile and can be used in many different roofing projects.

Low slope roofs can utilize single-ply membranes by directly adhering them to the insulation, creating a layer of protection. This roof replacement option is very simple and creates a fully leak-proof membrane that is smooth and visually pleasing.

Steel, wood, or stone ballasts can be attached to the single-ply membrane to create greater strength and durability.

Single-ply membranes can be used on low slope and flat roofs, and are ideal for commercial buildings, particularly in climates that have a lot of heavy rain and wind.

Differences between TPO & PVC Roofing

Although TPO and PVC roofs may look the same, they are in fact quite different in composition. The key factors that you want to consider when choosing between TPO and PVC single-ply membrane installation is the longevity of the roof, weather conditions, ease of installation, energy efficiency, and environmental impact.

  • TPO is a more affordable roofing application, but PVC has greater life span.
  • One of the biggest benefits of PVC membranes is their chemical resistance. For roofs that are exposed to grease and oil, PVC has an advantage over TPO. Although TPO does experience weathering due to acid, in the long run it is a better choice for water resistance. It is less likely to tear, break, and puncture due to non-chemical causes.
  • PVC is much easier to install due to its flexibility. TPO is stiffer and harder to weld.
  • Both PVC and TPO roofs are great choices in terms of energy efficiency. Both products come in light colors that are reflective, which improves heat and UV resistance.
  • If environmental impacts are a concern for you, your best option is TPO, as it is made 100% of recyclable materials. PVC contains chlorine and other chemicals which can cause environmental pollution during disposal.

TPO Roofing

PROS

  • More affordable
  • Energy efficient
  • Good weather resistance
  • Recyclable

CONS

  • Inconsistent manufacturing among different suppliers
  • Not very resistant to harsh chemicals

PVC Roofing

PROS

  • Trusted and proven system
  • Energy efficient
  • Strong chemical resistance
  • Easy to install and flexible system

CONS

  • More expensive than TPO
  • Not environmentally friendly

Thermoplastic Benefits

Single-ply membrane roofing has a proven track record for being a high performance roofing option.

Living in Vancouver’s rainy climate makes TPO and PVC great choices for your next roof. They are known for their excellent performance in extreme weather conditions including heavy rain, wind, and acid or chemical rainstorms.

TPO and PVC are available in various grades. This allows you to choose the protective grade you are looking for in terms of durability. The different grades come at different price points so you can choose the right grade for your roofing budget.

These roofing applications are also lightweight, flexible, energy efficient, and easy to install.

Torch On Roofing

Torch-On roofing is popular roofing system that is typically used on low or flat roofs

These roofs are very durable, require low maintenance and generally have a lifecycle of 20-25 years. Mountain West Roofing partners with the best torch-on roofing manufacturers to provide the best products to suit your needs.

torch-on roofing

What is Torch On Roofing?

A torch-on roof consists of two layers of modified bitumen membrane that are approximately 3-4 mm. thick. The base layer is mechanically secured with plates or attached to the substrate with adhesive. The cap layer is similarly composed, but it has a granulated surface to provide protection from the elements.

The top surface of the base layer and the bottom surface of the cap layer have a thermos-fusible surface, which means that they can be thermally merged together (often done by melting the layers with a propane torch)— hence the term “torch-on roofing”.

Benefits of Torch On Roofing

  • The major advantage of torch-on roofing is its durability. Its durability will help to keep maintenance costs low throughout the lifecycle of the roof.
  • The roof is water proof, which means it keeps moisture from invading the interior of the home.
  • The fact that the roof seals in heat, while also preventing moisture from entering the home, can help to reduce energy usage.
  • Suitable for both residential and commercial roofing projects.
